The text below summarises sections 14-18 of the Private Security Industry Act 2001.

The SIA will establish an Approved Contractor Scheme.

The SIA will ensure that the applicant meets the criteria and is 'fit and proper' to receive approved status.

• Those that obtain approval can advertise themselves as being approved
• conditions may be attached to the granting of approved status
• a contractor can be removed from the scheme
• an appeals procedure will be put in place.

The Act provides for a voluntary scheme but also provides power to convert it into a compulsory one.

Public Register of Approved Contractors

A register of approved contractors will be maintained by the SIA and can be inspected by members of the public.
