SIA Investigators Check Security Operatives

6 April 2006: Following the introduction of compulsory Security Industry Authority (SIA) licences for contracted security operatives, SIA investigators have carried out a series of visits to various sites to check that security operatives were legally deployed under the Private Security Industry Act 2001.

Between 20 March and 4 April, 52 sites (operated by 20 security companies) were visited and security operatives checked. SIA investigators were pleased with the overall levels of compliance but investigators issued 55 SIA warning notices to individuals who were found to be working unlawfully.

Dianne Tranmer, SIA Assistant Director Compliance & Investigation said:

"I'm pleased with the overall levels of compliance we found when visiting the sites and that the majority of security guards were lawfully deployed. However, it is disappointing that a small number were working unlawfully.

As we make clear in our published enforcement approach - we always take a fair and proportionate approach to any enforcement action and we take into account any relevant factors - but we expect compliance with the law at all times.

We will continue with our visits to ensure that only trained, qualified and fit and proper people are providing contracted security services. I would like to remind security companies to only deploy operatives lawfully, and for buyers of security services to verify that their security providers are operating within the law. Using unlicensed security operatives could damage your business reputation and your insurance cover may be affected."
