Cumbrian man loses his licence for refusing to wear it
21 June 2007: A Cumbrian doorman has had his Security Industry Authority (SIA) licence revoked and has been fined by the courts for refusing to display his licence whilst working; an offence under Section 9 of the Private Security Industry Act 2001.

On Saturday 9 September 2006, [Details removed] was found working without his licence at Jefferson's, Duke Street, Barrow-in-Furness, Cumbria, and police subsequently charged [Details removed] with a Section 9 offence.
On 15 January 2007 at Furness and District Magistrates' Court [Details removed] was found guilty of contravening SIA licensing conditions. [Details removed] was fined £400 and ordered to pay court costs of £120. [Details removed]'s SIA licence was revoked and no appeal has been received against the revocation or the court's decision.
Lucia Howland, an SIA Head of Investigation said:
I commend the efforts of Cumbria Police and the courts in bringing this case to trial. Door supervisors who persist in working without a licence, or not displaying their licence, put themselves at risk of prosecution and this conviction demonstrates that breaches of SIA licensing conditions will not be tolerated.
SIA licensed door staff have an important role in ensuring that the public in Cumbria can enjoy a night out with confidence that they are in a safe environment. The public should look for and expect to see professional door staff displaying their distinctive SIA Door Supervisor licences."
Notes to Editors:
- An applicant may appeal against a decision to revoke their SIA licence. This means they will not appear on the List of Revoked Licences until they have exhausted the appeal channels set down in the Private Security Industry Act 2001, or they fail to lodge appeal within the timeframe. Suspensions have immediate effect and an applicant cannot work during the life of an appeal against a suspension.
