Security Hits the Right Note at 'V' Festival

SIA and Police Praise Security Staff at 'V' Festival

24 August 2007: Last weekend, a team of investigators from the Security Industry Authority (SIA) visited the 'V' Festival at Hylands Park, Chelmsford to carry out a number of compliance checks on security operatives deployed at the event.

The SIA was fully supported by Essex Police, Chelmsford Borough Council and security providers. Investigators had permission to enter the site and undertake relevant checks from event organisers Maztec Ltd.

The team inspected licences and spoke to over 120 individuals across 24 locations; they found security staff were 100% compliant with the law.

David Porter, an SIA Head of Investigation said:

"I am very pleased with the results of the operation. Those requiring SIA licences were wearing them and were professional whilst undertaking their duties.

The SIA was involved throughout the planning process of the festival and had attended several Safety Advisory Group meetings to ensure everyone was aware of the SIA licensing requirement and to identify and resolve any issues. The success of the event can be attributed to a close working relationship with our partners and having a united approach to public safety."

Chief Inspector Craig McGarrigle from Essex Police said:

"Essex Police were really pleased to support the SIA with their compliance checks. The results are really pleasing and no doubt contributed to the success of the event."

Peter Parkman, Senior Licensing Manager at Chelmsford Borough Council said:

We welcome joint partnership working with the SIA to help make the 'V' Festival a safe and enjoyable event."

Notes to Editors:

  • Since 20 March 2006, SIA licences have been legally required for manned guarding personnel (supplied under contract). For those working in relation to licensed premises, SIA licences have been required since April 2005.
