Riding High in East Yorkshire - Multi Agency Operation a Success

13 June 2008: Investigators from the Security Industry Authority (SIA) and officers from Humberside Police and East Riding of Yorkshire Council carried out checks on door staff working on licensed premises across the East Riding area on Friday 6 June.

  • 9 licensed premises were visited in Goole, Hessle, Beverley and Bridlington.
  • 27 door supervisors were checked and all were licensed. However, three individuals were warned for the offence of not displaying their licence.

Jacqueline Parker, an SIA Head of Investigation said:

"The results from this operation are very positive. The majority of door staff were complying with the law and recognise the importance and value of holding a valid SIA licence. However, it was a little disappointing to find 3 door staff not observing licence conditions. The licence provides reassurance for the public that the holder is trained, qualified and professional.

We'd like to thank our partners at Humberside Police and East Riding of Yorkshire Council for working with us and we will continue with our visits to ensure that only SIA licensed door staff work in positions of trust."

Pc Chris Chapman, 'C' Division Licensing for Humberside Police, said:

"There has been much hard work carried out in recent months within the East Riding area to ensure that those persons operating as door staff are suitable, qualified and holders of the SIA licence. The results of the joint initiative are very positive and licensed premises must be given credit for their partnership work with the Police, East Riding council and the SIA. Joint visits will continue in the future and those premises operating legally have nothing to fear."

Tina Holtby, Acting Licensing Manager at East Riding of Yorkshire Council said:

"It is vital people feel safe when they go out to bars, pubs and clubs in the East Riding area and door staff play an integral role in helping to maintain public safety. We were pleased with Friday's outcome and pleased for the premises licence holders and door supervisors who have worked with us in the last 5 months to deal with various problems relating to their licences. We look forward to working with the SIA and Humberside Police on more operations and will continue with our on going licensing checks."

Notes to Editors:

  • It is an offence to work as a door supervisor (in house and contract) in Great Britain without an SIA licence. A Door Supervisor licence is required if manned guarding activities are undertaken in relation to licensed premises.
  • The maximum penalty for committing an offence such as working without a licence or supplying unlicensed staff is six months' imprisonment and/or fine up to £5,000 (or trial on indictment to crown court, whereby an unlimited fine and/or five years' imprisonment could be imposed)
  • SIA licences can be checked through the Register of Licence Holders, available 24-hours on the SIA website.
