SIA and Partners Target Coatbridge's Rogue Security

Multi-agency Operation in North Lanarkshire

23 September 2008: Investigators from the Security Industry Authority (SIA) joined officers from Strathclyde Police and investigators from the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) and HMRC to target rogue security firms and unlicensed security activity last Tuesday.

During the intelligence-led operation, investigators targeted security operatives working at seven construction sites in Coatbridge, North Lanarkshire.

Of the 10 security operatives checked, 6 did not hold valid SIA licences and 2 were not displaying their SIA licence - both are offences under the Private Security Industry Act 2001.

Christy Hopkins, an SIA Head of Investigation said:

"We will keep targeting security sites and keep the environment as hostile as possible for rogue security firms, we cannot let them have a strong hold in the security industry.

By working in together with our partners, we send a strong message that non compliance with the law will not be tolerated."

Detective Sergeant Ian Connelly, who headed the joint operation said:

"I am pleased with the results of this operation. We are sending out a strong message to companies who provide security to the building industry - you have to comply with legislation. Companies who are employing security providers must ensure that they are employing credible firms."
