SIA and West Yorkshire Police Check Door Staff

25 September 2008: On Saturday, investigators from the Security Industry Authority (SIA), officers from West Yorkshire Police City & Holbeck Division, and Leeds City Council enforcement officers checked door staff working in licensed premises in Leeds.

As part of the targeted operation, checks were made at 7 licensed premises to ensure door staff were working legally and held SIA licences.

25 door staff held valid SIA licences and one unlicensed doorman was found working illegally.

Stephanie Hunter, an SIA Investigator said:

"An SIA door supervisor licence shows that the holder is trained, qualified and a fit and proper person for their role. This joint operation demonstrated high levels of compliance with the law in Leeds. However, door supervisors working without a licence can be reported to us through Crimestoppers or the SIA website."

Inspector Ron Jones, who leads the City Neighbourhood Policing Team, said:

"It is vital that visitors to Leeds' city centre bars and clubs feel safe during their nights out, and last weekend's successful operation shows how seriously police in City and Holbeck and the SIA take this.

By working together like this we hope to ensure that unlicensed and illegal doorstaff continue to have no place at our bars and clubs, and visitors to the city can enjoy the nightlife safely."
