One of the SIA's aims is a "strengthened extended police family by encouraging and supporting further engagement of the private security industry".
The SIA believes that as a member of the extended police family, a regulated private security industry should be recognised, used and valued as a significant contributor to the:
- reduction of crime
- reduction of disorder
- reduction of anti-social behaviour
- improvement of public safety; and
- provision of reassurance.
The private security industry should do this without compromising its commercial interests and without seeking to replace the unique accountability and services provided by the police or other family members. It should play its part by working collaboratively with others and doing only those things for which it is significantly skilled and competent.
Interested parties ought to be aware of the scale of opportunity provided by a regulated private security industry; some estimates suggest that the number of people employed in the industry is 2-3 times greater than the size of the combined police force of Great Britain.
