Best Practice

Many individuals within the private security industry are interested in maintaining their skills and continued professional development (CPD) between licence-linked competency assessments.

Encouraging CPD is part of our ongoing commitment to promote standards and professionalism within the industry, and is a key objective of our competency renewal strategy. However, please note that we cannot endorse or recommend any specific training or qualifications outside of the mandatory requirements for licensing.

We have published standards of behaviour for:

Key Holders

There is no competency requirement for key holding. This is because the Private Security Industry Act 2001 defines key holding solely as holding keys and does not include activities relating to a security response. However, we welcome the best practice work that is being done by Skills for Security and various awarding bodies - please approach these organisations for details.

Private Investigators

This sector is not currently regulated by us. However, we want to share our research with the private investigator sector and other stakeholders now, to allow them to benefit from the best practice that has been identified.

Please note: the results of our research are not linked to SIA licensing in any way.
