Training Qualifications Required by the SIA
Approved Trainers in England and Wales:
Lifelong Learning UK (in collaboration with the Department for Innovation, Universities and Skills) introduced a new teaching qualifications framework in September 2007. The new framework applies only to England and Wales but may be extended in the future to cover the rest of Great Britain.
As of 1 September 2007, regardless of whether or not the training is publicly funded:
- All trainers not currently active in delivering security licence-linked qualifications, wishing to deliver any of the licence to practise qualifications based on competencies developed by the SIA, will be required to achieve the 'Preparing to Teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector' (PTLLS) award before approval can be granted;
- Trainers who meet the previous requirements will need to ensure they comply with the new framework of qualifications needed by those teaching in the Lifelong Learning Sector by 2010. Awarding bodies will provide guidance on current qualifications and the additional requirements necessary to achieve PTLLS status.
For further information on how existing qualifications map into the new framework of qualifications for professional trainers, please contact the awarding body that issued your certificate. Detailed information on the new framework can be obtained from the LLUK web site. In addition, guidance on meeting the requirements of the new framework has been published by Skills for Security: it can be downloaded from their website.
Approved Trainers in Scotland:
The current SIA requirement for all trainers of candidates undertaking the SIA endorsed licensing qualifications in Scotland is to have a teaching or training qualification at S/NVQ level 3 (or equivalent), which has been accredited by SQA/QCA or validated by HEI.
Qualifications for Trainers of Conflict Management
The SIA requires all trainers delivering scenario-based conflict management training for the SIA approved qualifications to have received relevant training. Trainers are required to hold an NQF Level 3 qualification in the delivery of conflict management training. These are:
- Edexcel Level 3 BTEC Certificate in Conflict Management Training
- City & Guilds Level 3 Certificate for Deliverers of Conflict Management Training
Sector Competence for Approved Trainers
Trainers delivering training for the SIA approved qualifications must demonstrate that they have the necessary understanding of the relevant licensing sector. Requirements for sector competence are published in each sector's 'Specification for Core Competency Training and Qualifications':
Close Protection: Accreditation of Prior Learning (APL)
The awarding bodies offering Close Protection qualifications have developed a guidance document (download size: 139kb) to help training providers assess APL applications; this document is endorsed by the SIA. They have also developed an APL Application Form (download size: 77kb) which should be used to record any evidence supporting the decision that is made. All training providers assessing APL applications for the Close Protection licensing qualifications should use these documents.
Qualification Exemptions
Information on how we process formal training exemptions from the UK and overseas is available in our Core Competency Exemption Policy (download size: 392kb).
