Brendan O’Friel was born in the Isle of Man but has spent much of his life in the North West of England. He was in the Prison Service from 1963-1996, including 11 years as a Governing Governor. He was Chairman of the Prison Governors Assocation from 1990-1995.

He is currently Chairman of the Rail Passengers Committee for North Western England and is Deputy Chairman of the Rail Passengers Council. He is a member of the Cheshire Area Probation Board and a Lay Member of the Employment Tribunals. He is a Trustee of the Prison Reform Trust and the Prison Video Trust.
