Obtaining a translation

If you need to submit a document in a foreign language you must first have the document translated and then send the original document with the translation to the Security Industry Authority. You will have to pay for any costs involved.

The work should be carried out by an individual who is professionally accredited or a translation company which holds the same accreditation. If the translation is carried out by an individual it will only be accepted from individuals who are accredited members of the Institute of Translation and Interpreting (ITI) or the Institute of Linguists (IoL). If the translation is carried out by a company, rather than an individual, then that company should be accredited by either the Institute of Linguists (IoL) or the Association of Translation Companies (ATC).

A translation carried out by an accredited person or organisation will be presented on headed paper showing the ATC or IoL logo or will carry the ITI ‘seal’.

  • ATC translations will only be accepted from companies holding either Full or Overseas Membership, and will not be accepted from those with Affiliate or Associate Memberships.

  • ITI translations will only be accepted from members of the ITI holding Qualified or Corporate Membership. Translations from those with Associate or Student Membership levels will not be accepted.

  • IoL translations will only be accepted from Fellows (FIL) and Members (MIL) of the Institute of Linguists (IoL). Translations from those who are listed as Associates of the Institute (AIL) will not be accepted.

Translations will also be accepted from embassies and High Commissions.
