Training & qualifications – EEA & accession state licences information

Disclaimer: This information has been collated from information presented to the SIA from United Kingdom and overseas government sources. It should not be viewed as exhaustive and, while we endeavour to keep information up to date, we cannot accept responsibility for any omissions or inaccuracies.

  • If you hold a licence issued by a country within the EEA or one of the Accession States and you were required, as a condition of that licence, to have your criminal record checked, it may not be necessary for you to have those checks made again. But this will only apply where:

  • Your licence is valid: we may seek verification of that if we do not have sufficient information

  • Checks on your criminal record are fully up to date and cover the last five years, including any periods of six months or more spent outside the country issuing the licence or outside the UK

  • The checks you were required to have made in order to be issued with a licence must cover all relevant offences: see the offence categories in the SIA’s published licensing criteria.

  • Any periods spent in the UK must be covered by a certificate issued by the Criminal Records Bureau or the Scottish Criminal Records Office

A list of the countries within the EEA and Accession States that currently issue licences for employment in the private security industry is attached. We do not hold full information about the extent of any criminal record checks that are pre-requisites to these licences so we would strongly recommend that you contact the issuing authority to obtain verification about the criminal record checks and the validity of your licence. Wherever possible we have included contact details for the issuing authorities.
